A Step Up

Pinterest Success?? Sure

Makeover?? Could be.

Redecorating?? Yes

So, here is the before of a cute step stool.

And here is the after.

It was really a quick reupholster job. The only issue I really had was reusing the tacks.  Since I had taken them out and wanted to use them again, most of them were bent.  I tried to straighten them out the best I could... that took the most work.

Next time, I'll go buy new upholstering tacks!

If you want to see the almost step by step, you can click on the YouTube video that I made, below.

And here, side by side, is the before and after.  I had the material on hand from another project, so the total cost for the renovation project $0.00.
I think I could do this again.  So yes.... two thumbs up for this one!!

Shiny and New

Thanksgiving has come and gone.

The kids were home for a few days for their fall break.  Now they both have gone back to school.

The two inches of snow we had on the ground melted with sunshine and 46 degree temperatures this weekend.

And, the few bucks we had in our pocket are definitely spent!

One surprise purchase was a new microwave.  Ugh, right before our Thanksgiving feast!  Thank goodness for early Black Friday sales.... we hope, we think we got a deal.

I started to reheat some left overs and the microwave light came on.  The keypad worked as I entered the time to reheat, and the turntable inside rotated as the power started.  Three minutes later I pulled out my food, and it was still cold.  That was weird!!!!

I tried again.  Nothing happened.  Then I put a glass measuring cup filled with water and powered up the oven.  Lights, motor and turntable all worked.... but the water was still cold.  Something was wrong, but what?

The hubby and I ran errands and one of them was stopping at our local appliance store.  The magnetron tube was kaput and we had run out the warranty about a year and half ago.  The part would run us over $170, not including labor.  All said and done, to repair the unit would cost up to $300!  Yikes!

That was information from the parts department.  From the sales department they told us a replacement for the same current model was on sale for Black Friday deals.  He gave us a price of $320.  A new unit for 20 bucks more?  Maybe.

So, the hubby checked online and found a 'great' deal at a big box store near his office and was able to find the exact microwave we wanted for $250.

Right before the big day I had a shiny and new, working microwave.  I am very thankful.  And I am very blessed.

Before, After & After

Last weeks' post was a view into our backyard.

This tree always lets the leaves 'fall' so late.

All of our other trees have been empty for almost 3 weeks.  But this huge mulberry tree loves to hang on to its' leaves until the middle of November.  We used to place a bet in the family, and whoever guessed closest to the 'release' date, won the pot!  But now since we are an empty nest....no bets!  The backyard looked like this on Monday, November 10, 2014.

It was a nice fall day with temps in the mid 50s.

This is the backyard on Tuesday the 11th.  Over night and through most of the morning the tree just let it go...... and now it looked like this..... the temperature was dropping fast and it was only in the upper 20s that day.

We waited until this past weekend (Saturday) and mowed, mulched, raked and blew tons of leaves.  It took hours.... I was exhausted .... and I didn't get a photo.... until Sunday morning when the yard looked like this.....

Good thing we had a very small window to clean up the majority of the leaves!!!  Fall and winter in less than 7 days.  The lovely mid-west.

I still love this view.... every day!!!  Before and after!

Make Like a Tree... and Leave

I see a mess outside my kitchen window. This is the view into our backyard.

However, when I saw this picture I took, it doesn't look that bad.  (Have I ever mentioned that I love having my camera on my iphone.... instant pictures.... so cool)

But believe me, wet, soggy leaves from this huge mulberry tree and the huge hostas that scatter around the base .... looks like a lot of work to me!!! The tree in psychological terms is ... still half full!!! Eight years now, this tree always decides to let go into almost mid-November.

The temperature is dropping from the high 50s yesterday to the low 30s tomorrow.  Frozen leaves anyone???

I am always grateful to sit at my kitchen table and type my blog.... while I get to see first hand all that nature IS, just outside my very own window.  I am truly blessed.

How can I Brighten Someones Day .... today! :0)

It Strikes a Chord

I like how my first picture has the word 'adventure' in it!!

I do love an adventure!
Sometimes I am a bit afraid of them.

Instead of explaining it out to my then young children, I told them we weren't always sure where we were going, but it certainly was going to be an adventure!

An adventure is an exciting or unusual experience.

True to my nature ... although most of the time I am calm and collected .... I really like to have unusual experiences!!!

One of my goals a few years ago was to take up piano again.  I played as a young child from about  8 years to 12 years old.  I can read notes.  I can site read.  I understand melodies and I could carry a tune ... but I never could quite put that all together and play a beautiful piece of music.  And I'm perfectly fine with that.

I have moved my piano with me.... 4 times.

I like how it looks in ALL of my houses.  And throughout the 38 years since I took piano lessons, I have been stuck playing the music I left off with.

But!!!!! But today I ran my errands and decided I want a little more out of the ivory that has been sitting so quiet in my dinning room!!!

I was inspired again when I met up with a piano teacher at an event in February.  We got talking and she suggested that as an 'adult' player, I wouldn't really need to take lessons because I have the basics, but what I needed to do was discard my 40 year old piano books and get something new!

So, today as I dropped our well weathered American Flag at our local city flag store, I decided to go into the 'Players Bench'  (cute name for a music store) next door and find some new music!!!

I've taken the plunge and have gone on an adventure!!

I'm already on page 27 ( it started out with page 3, so I'm not that far along)..... but I've already had an aha moment!  Or maybe my memory has come back to me.  I finally get what the letters above the staff mean for the CHORD accompaniment.  You can see what I'm talking about in the following picture, it is the arrows in red!

And just so you know too.... I just figured out how to add the red arrows on Photo Shop!!!!

But going back to the chords .... In all of my previous beginning children's piano books, as far as I can tell.... I've had the left hand notes, or the chords.... ALWAYS written out with the actual notes.  I recall on my cello music and my choral music seeing the C, F & G7 on the top of the staff.... but NEVER knew what they meant.  I wondered how guitarist knew what to play!!! It's the chord accompaniment!!!

This adventure back into basic music has certainly brightened my day!  Finally, spring is here almost at 66 degrees.... and yet the sun is NOT SHINING.... but I will find the music somewhere to.... Annie, the Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow.... so instead for today .... I will make beautiful music that will SHINE!!!

Elbow Grease

Is it POSSIBLE for you to tell from this picture what I did?

I love my kitchen.

I love to cook.

My supervisor had to get in on the picture.  He likes to inspect all things that fall on the floor.

From the first picture, is there anything that catches your eye??

Stainless appliances.  We purchased these after we moved in.  They are almost 8 years old.  I'm very happy with them... but at times they are a lot to clean.  They almost remind me of my days working at McDonald's.  When it was slow, one of our jobs was to clean the stainless.  Everything was stainless then.

With this closer view ... what do you think I made POSSIBLE?

Did you spot the tea pot on the stove top?

Because of that cute little tea pot .... I spent over 4 hours cleaning the soffits on top of  my kitchen cabinets and everything else up there.

When I have company over, I often see what nobody will notice.  However, with my Book Club coming over last week, I realized that I wanted to serve tea (since they are ALL hot tea drinkers).  All 6 of my teapots are for decoration.  But I needed one to hold the hot water.

After I retrieved it from the top of the cabinet, I realized how gummy and greasy and gross it was.

I got the soapy water flowing, found the cleaning rags and washed it inside and out.  It had a sparkle to it!!!  And while I was 6 feet up in the air.... I also realized it had been quite a while since I had cleaned the top of the cabinets and all the baskets of flowers and the cooking tins and the decorative plates.

That cute little white teapot paved the way and made it POSSIBLE or maybe impossible to ignore cleaning.

Cleaning that no one would see ... but now I've finished one of those tasks on my to do list, and can move on to the next thing that may happen!

Strange how a teapot can represent at the same time the comforts of solitude and the pleasures of company

Cooper's Corner

We are just laying around the house.

Everyone is home.  Some are still sleeping. Others are 'working' on their computers.

We can feel the cold air falling to the floor.  Sometimes it's hard to get comfortable and cozy.

Our new year came in very quietly.

I heard some fireworks being let off in the distance.  I don't like fireworks, they make my body start to shake and quiver.  But when I get a hug from my human mom, it seems to calm me down.

Anyway.... there were a few hoots and hollers as the clock struck midnight.

We are in the year 2014.

What will happen?  My friend Tucker and I plan on going on a few adventures.  Care to join us?

A little step may be the beginning of a great journey.... imagine the possibilities!

This year Tucker will be adding a few words of wisdom to the blog ....

Currently it is 14 degrees out and it had been snowing lightly for almost two days straight.  I don't know the official measurement, but when I go outside to do my duty.... my belly drags in the snow... so maybe 8-10 inches of new fluffy stuff.

No walks.  Tucker's paws can't handle the cold.  He almost tumbles over while trying to lift his leg.  He's wobbly like that anyway... he'd get lost in a snow drift!  The wind is very chilly.  But I like the fact my entire family has been home all together for a few days.

LIFE'S little Collections

Going back to a simpler life is not a step backward - Yvon Chouinard

Week #52 LIFE'S simple pleasures - walking the walk and talking the talk

We made it to the end of 2013!

Each week on my blog I tried to highlight different things in my LIFE that I thought were one of LIFE'S simple pleasures.... the little things... things that don't cost a lot of money... part of our world...beautiful things right outside my door!

Although  it may seem that LIFE throws me a curve ball every once in a while... I truly want to express how blessed I am!!!

Each new day is another chance to change your life.

As I reflect on this last full week of 2013 I have discovered or re-discovered a lot of beautiful things over the last 52 weeks: graduation, American Flag, stop and smell the roses, front porch, bugs, day adventure, birthday celebration, collections, parks, umbrellas, summer time, fairs, lefties, stages of life, picnics, sounds of summer, volunteer, hearts, fall, home.

A good life is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realize how blessed you are.

So, if you've stopped my blog throughout the year ...(thank you, you should have left me a comment so I knew you visited!) have you looked around to see all the simple pleasures, the little things that are a part of your LIFE?  Amazing, huh?

In 2014 I'm on the hunt for 'possibilities'. I found this recently, but will tweak it at some point to reflect me....

Ho Ho Ho!!

Down through the chimney....

Week #51 LIFE'S simple pleasures - Christmas

Are you ready?  O' come all ye faithful....I'm as ready as I could ever be.  I so get why people can get stressed this time of year.  Done Decking the Halls?  There is constant bombardment of advertising.... Joy to the World....Are your stockings hanging by the chimney with care?  Mine are.... see the picture above?  I got a wonderful handmade gift from a special friend.... banners are one of the "IN" things this year... and look?  It perfectly matches our stocking holders on the mantel!  Noel, Noel!!

Christmas time is really a simple pleasure ... it depends on how complicated we make it.  If we have faith and believe what the celebration was meant to be ... then all that wasted energy is uplifted to the spirit of peace, joy and love.

Well, you should probably get back to it.... only 6 more days until that magical day.  So much to do, right???  Have yourself a Merry 'little' Christmas....

That Time of Year

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.

Week #51 LIFE'S simple pleasures - Christmas

I almost second guessed myself.  Is it really week #51?

Looking at the actual calendar for December, I see that the 29th of December falls on a Sunday, the beginning of a new week, so that would technically be week 53.... but if you do the math and divide 365 days a year by 7 days a week, you actually get 52.14 weeks... but I guess that really doesn't count for figuring out the math of a calendar.

Good thing... that's all way to complicated for me, anyway.

Christmas is a beautiful time of year.  It can also be a difficult time of year. How ever you celebrate the reason for the season, I hope this year, at this moment you are being surrounded by peace, joy and love!

Keep calm and get your Ho, Ho, Ho on.

What's Your Sign?

If you are not failing every now and again, it's a sign your not doing anything very innovative
~ Woody Allen

Week #49 LIFE'S Simple pleasures - a sign

You could take this weeks' simple pleasure literally as a physical object... a real piece of wood or metal that has creative, fun, interesting words on it and it can be posted on a wall or a door or on a stick/stake pounded into the ground ... or it could be something that stands for something to someone in some capacity!!!

The last definition sounds, I don't know... kind of spacey?!?  But that word spacey might even be a closer definition to the semiotics study... a 'sign' could very well be something that comes to your mind... out of thin air... and it confirms your purpose at that very moment!

I've always known this, but obviously... the English language is very complicated. So many meanings for one word.

You can 'sign up'... which means you add your name and signature to a list.
There is 'sign language' ... where hearing impaired people use their fingers and hands to speak words.
There are 'sign of the times' ... signifies the situation evident in the current times.
Hey baby, what's your sign? ... refers to astrological and zodiac celestial spheres
Exit sign ...  a lit information board that tells you where you can go!

What signs can you find today?
By the way, I am an Aries which is the first sign of the Zodiac. Openness, enthusiasm and individualism are the main traits of the Arians. They are outspoken, alert, quick to act and speak. They prefer to speak than to listen. Arians are ambitious, with lots of drive and a strong will to lead. They are poor followers. Fiercely independent, they usually take the side of the underdog in any controversy. They are champions of lost causes and losing battles. This trait is due to a strong belief in their own abilities to turn any situation around.

The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination ~ Albert Einstein

The KEY to LIFE

Sing us a song you're the piano man ... -  Billy Joel

Week #46 LIFE'S simple pleasures - music

Do you play a musical instrument?  Is your voice your instrument?

Music is a huge part of a lot of peoples lives.  It's one of my simple pleasures.

Music is what feelings sound like.

If you are a movie fan just hearing a song can bring you back in time.

The video doesn't quite work when you press play, but turn up the sound.... you'll know....
or, how about this one...

If you ever want to hear great movie theme songs, go to YouTube and just put that in the search engine.

Music is the sound track to all the good and bad times we have.

LIFE is like a piano.  The white keys are happy days and the black keys are sad ones, just remember that you need both to make music.

Bed of Roses

You've made your bed, now lie in it.

Week #43 LIFE'S simple pleasures - my/your bed

I chose to focus 2013 on LIFE'S simple pleasures as part of the House of Shine's Year of Project and to put a twist on it, here is another way to define my year:

L - learning
I - Inspiring
F - Feeling
E - Evolving
S - Shining

...looking at every day things, little things, and free or inexpensive things that bring me joy and happiness.

What a better way to share that by writing my experiences here on my blog.  It's a way for me to incorporate my love for writing and my enthusiasm to show off my photography, paper crafting, cooking and in general, creating!

Things I do every day:
1 Get up
2 Survive
3 Go back to bed

Earlier this week, I asked if you make your bed.  Strange question, right?  I am often validated in my writing by some sort of sign.  And yes!  Sometimes I really have to search for a 'sign'... but this week it was obvious.

Part of my journey for 2013 is seeking out happy things, simple things etc... I have the book The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and I was inspired to follow her blog and Facebook sites. Right before I began writing this post she posed a question on Facebook (she does this most days, is she writing another book?) but her question was: Do you make your bed?

So far she has 249 responses before 9am central time.  Here are a few:
Every day. Makes the room look instantly better - D
No, whats the point - T
Yes, it makes me feel I got one thing done today - B
Absolutely.  Takes two minutes - P

Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

Now, in the BIG picture of LIFE, what does it matter if you make your bed or not?  But the principle of the question is part of the root to writing my blog....I need to make the time to enjoy LIFE'S simple pleasures.  Having a comfortable bed is one of them.  And for week #43, anything that relates to the bed is something that I want to learn more about...

Sometimes the dreams that come true in LIFE are the dreams you never knew you had...

I am into Week #43 of this year and what an adventure it has been discovering the simple things in LIFE. Maybe I found my bed of roses and am leading and easy and peaceful LIFE.  But I do think every now and then....

LIFE is short.... jump on the BED.

Midwest Living

What I  love most about my home is who I share it with.

Week #40 - LIFE'S simple pleasure - HOME

Travel east, travel west but at home LIFE is the best.

I truly think we all need to leave our home, to really appreciate what we have.

We went on a mini vacation staying in someone else's home, and it was a good experience!  Well, actually it was a Bed & Breakfast, so it was a welcoming home that is REALLY open for strangers to come and stay.
This is a doctored up photo, but it is the front of the Victorian bed and breakfast we stayed at.  Quite 'homey' - don't you think? It has been a while since we stayed in a bed and breakfast, but it really is someone who opens up their actual home to strangers.  There were chickens in a coop in the backyard and a pond filled with catfish in the front.  Each room in the house was uniquely decorated to fit an old Victorian house.  It had a loving warm feel.  The proprietor had a passion to build her home and add interesting touches to every nook and corner.

We stayed in the Theatre Room and even had a secret passage to our own 'private' screening room.  And each morning after waking from a very private & comfortable room with luscious soft bedding and a cool brass framed bed, we had a delicious 'home' made breakfast with fresh fruit, hot breakfast casseroles and eggs Benedict!

I enjoyed our mini vacation and liked the chance to glimpse into the day of a LIFE of someone else and their home. It has given me a new perspective, and opening my own front door when we got home, gave me a new sense of appreciation for the house we made into our home.

A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams.

Feeling a Little Stuffed

I haven't really learned to laugh at myself...

I tend to giggle....
...sometimes with extreme excitement when things come together!

And yet most of what I do... is quite simple.  I'm not out to create or design something fantabulous, but I do know my purpose is to put a little SHINE in my corner of the world!

Week # 38 LIFE'S simple pleasures - fall

So many things come to mind when I think of fall.  It's sweater time in the Midwest (which means hopefully, no more sweatin') oh, a cute boot weather!!!  It means pumpkins and jack-o-laterns.  Apple cider and pumpkin spice. Crunchy leaves and corn stalks.  And scarecrows.

I giggle like a little school girl because I remember I had this picture.  Now, where to find it after 2 moves to different states and 15 years!!!!  I think I always wanted to be a clown.  Perform, act, dress up and wear make-up.  One particular neighborhood we lived in, parent participation in our annual  Halloween parade was 'almost' mandatory.

What can I say?  Fall and scarecrows are synonymous.

Scarecrows or hay-men are human shaped decoys dressed in old clothing out in the field to protect the crops from seed eating crows!  They can be scary with ugly masks and dangling limbs that wave in the wind... or they can be cute with happy smiles on their faces! I don't want to scare crows, let alone people with my cute and whimsical scarecrows, they are a staple in fall decorations and on greeting cards!

Can you tell which one of these scrappy, floppy, happy men I made? And which is store bought?

I'm a little scarecrow stuffed with hay,
Standing watch in my field all day.
when I see a crow I like to shout,
"Hey Mr. Crow, you'd better get out"

I think I might go outside and just stand in the sun SHINE.  No crows to chase away here.... maybe a hawk or a cardinal!

And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.

Falling into Place

I'm in a new stage of my LIFE and there have been a lot of changes going on around our house.

Although it's almost 90 degrees out, it somewhat feels like fall.  The seasons are changing as well. I see leaves flying off the trees.  We've had some weird weather around here this summer.  And of course, once the kids start going back to school... it's automatically fall.

Last week I had Sinistrality (the condition I've had my entire life, being left handed) and now I have Empty Nest Syndrome  (a feeling of grief and loneliness parents may feel when their children leave home for the first time, such as to live on their own or to attend a college).

I'll admit that I'm feeling very emotional, but I'm also a little excited!!

Last Saturday I went on a 14 mile bike ride with a neighbor.  No big deal, right?  But I can't tell you the last time I ever went on 14 mile bike ride.  And it's not that I wouldn't have done it with my kids around before.... I just never did.

Can you see that shine on the counter top???  I can't tell you how long ago it ever looked like this for more than one day.  Granted, I am a boarder line 'cleaning freak'.... but when you have teenagers who could careless about their room or bathroom.... I stopped being their 'maid' a few years ago. (If my children are reading this... I love you very much, but sometimes you need to just clean the ick at least more than once every three months.)

My first two homegrown vine tomatoes.  I'm so proud!  Although I've grown sun flowers and pumpkins from seed, I'm not sure I was ever so blessed with this abundance of vegetation from two little free seedlings. And too, I've gardened and planted with my children and they've helped with mowing the lawn and raking the leaves.  Being an Empty Nester, I will no longer have that 'free' help.

Week #34 LIFE'S simple pleasures - stage of LIFE (changes)

I'm very proud of my two kids who both wore graduation gowns like the one above.  But I'm a bit excited that I finally stuffed it into the 'girls' closet after it was hanging off the laundry door room for 74 days.  I didn't bug her to 'put it away'.... and guess what.... she never did.

It's what they call bitter sweet. I'm a bit of both happy and sad that the kids are away at college.  I miss the day to day interaction.  I miss their hugs.  I miss the sound of their footsteps down the stairs or the shower running and running. The dogs miss them too!

But a part of me is kind of excited that I get to clean up the kitchen(insert: any room in the house) and it will actually stay that way!  I kind of like having the full driveway open when I pull my car out and I really don't have to explain where I'm going or when I'm coming back.  I'm looking forward to trying new things that maybe I didn't have the chance to do before.

A good LIFE is when you assume nothing, do more, need less, smile often, dream big, laugh a lot and realize how blessed you are!

The Accumulator

If something has sentimental value to it, sharing those things with others can create positive emotions and keep the past present.
Week #28 LIFE'S simple pleasures - collections

The 'hobby' of gathering and storing 'things' and neatly organizing, maintaining and finding special items are all part of the positive aspects of being a collector

For every hobby collector, there is probably someone who goes overboard.   The images of Hoarding Buried Alive and Hoarders television shows are more likely to come to mind when someone shares their 'hobby' with someone who doesn't have the same interests.  There are always extremes in all situations.

** This by no means relates to anyone that I know personally.... you can put really any hobby item in place for the 'toy train'.

If a toy train collector creates an entire room for his collection, and he has hundreds of trains that run on a track with miniature trees and crossing gates, some are kept in special glass boxes on shelves, he re-wires the electric to his home to hold all the volts to run the trains, pours real water for steam in the engine, has beautifully framed paintings and posters of train memorabilia covering the walls, there is a wide screen tv that plays videos and special train songs being piped in through the speakers, he washes and waxes the trains, adds oil to the tracks, paints special figurines in the small old town villages .... someone visiting this room who doesn't particular find an interest in toy trains would easily think this person is reliving their child hood and could be on the verge of hoarding. But really, he is just a true collector, items are neatly organized, maintained and maniuplated with ease.  Sharing his passion creates positive emotions!

I don't particularly collect slippers, but my cute mom enjoys making them and gives them to me.  We use them in my family, but I also like to share them with friends.  Right now, I have a small 'collection' of slippers... I know where they are and I can include them in a wonderful and thoughtful gift for someone.

I have small collections that don't overwhelm me and take over my life.  Many of my collections make me smile and like most things I do in LIFE, everything in moderation.

I don't go out of my way to collect thread.  But through the years, I figured using colorful items in jars is a simple way to create a unique decoration for my home.  Someone once told me, you should have a few items out just to start a conversation... thus a conversation piece.

To accommodate all of these unique and outrageous collections, hobby stores have designed all kinds of ways for the enthusiast to display their 'stuff'.  They actually have album cover frames.  There are shadow boxes and intersting case holders.  Albums, the actual cardboard sleeve that would hold a 'real' vinyl record.... we no longer have a stereo, let alone a record player... but we did keep a 'small' collection (maybe 30?) of albums...  because we have the emotional attachment of them to our youth... where LIFE seemed so easy and music was a part of our every day activities... some of these covers are actually pretty cool little pieces of art!  We now have conversation starters when you walk down into our basement!

They may not be of value to anyone else... maybe a few items that I 'collect' could be... antique sewing machine, Cabbage Patch doll with it's original adoption papers, Big Little books from Western Publishing, Longaberger Baskets, Beany Babies... a little bit of everything.

One of LIFE'S simple pleasures is collecting things that engage you and are of emotional value and interest to you and help you relive happier times from our childhood!

You Are A Child's Plaything

Ride like the wind Bullseye!
Yee-haw!

What do the toys do when Andy their owner leaves the room? They of course come to LIFE!

There is something about a great kids' movie that makes me smile anytime I see one of the characters or I hear a theme song.  You've got a friend in me!!!  I love the story of Toy Story.... 1, 2, 3!

Week # 28 LIFE'S simple pleasures - collections

Collectables or collectibles, are objects regarded as being of value or interest.

I have a few different collectables.  I never actually sought out collecting Toy Story toys... but here's how I think it happened.

It's obvious, a sign of the times!  1995 and my son was two.... a perfect way to decorate his little boy room.... just like the 'real' kid Andy's clouds on his bedroom walls in the movie.... (maybe when I come across it in a scrapbook I'll find a picture of what my son's room turned out to be.)

I always admired the great marketing plan Pixar and Disney movie makers had... sell the toys that are being promoted in the movie. There was wallpaper and bedding just like the kids' in the movie. Even Disney theme parks had exclusive rides about the characters.... or parts of the movie. Buy the toy at the end of the ride!  Perfect!

If you think back just like many of the simple pleasures I've highlighted on my blog.... the sign of the times can be determined by the popular characters, celebrities, sports teams and musicians of the era.... back in the 30s and 40s little bedrooms would be sparsley decorated with themes (or items) related cowboys and Indians  and war hero's, during the 40s and 50s sports teams were hot and dreamy singers were popular, in the 60s and 70s rock bands and musicians were hip, then in 80s & 90s StarWars and other cult movies were all the rage.... it all goes through a POP(ular) cycle.

Woody & Buzz

So of course, we bought our son his own Woody (Doll) and Buzz Lightyear.   We got a Piggy Bank... the Slinky dog.... If you look behind Woody, you'll notice a Fisher Price phone.... that isn't a remake, it's the actual one I had when I was a little girl.

What's old is new again... or it becomes a collectable.... for what dollar value??? How can you put a price tag on memories? The fun thing about collectables is that we all have our different reasons why we like something. What's one man's junk is another man's treasure?
As the kids grew up and into their next stage, they no longer found the fascination with these Toy Story toys... but with each new movie, McDonald's and Target started selling tiny collectibles of all the characters from the movie.  And my family loved finding ones we didn't have yet... so the collection grew.  Every Christmas I got a new toy... to add to the collection!

Now these cute and fun toys sit on a few shelves in our basement.... collecting dust.  Sometimes I wonder what happens when the lights go out.... it makes me smile to think that maybe they have a little fun when the humans are away!
